By Midwest Select, on July 24th, 2012 Midwest United U14 traveled to Schwan’s USA Cup, a week-long international tournament, held in Blaine, MN, just north of Minneapolis. United was one of 958 teams attending from 22 states and 16 countries. United players were proud to represent the Joplin area at the head of the parade of teams at the opening ceremonies. Immediately following the parade, Josue Hernandez and his teammates carried the flame as a part of the torch-lighting segment of the ceremonies.
United advanced to the playoffs with two victories over American teams and one loss to a team from the Dominican Republic. In the playoffs, United was tied 1-1 at half with Rio de Janeiro Select, but eventually was bested in the second half by the potent Brazilian offense.
The team had a great learning experience at the tournament, made many new friends from the Marquette Waves team, and participated in a number of fun activities, including beach soccer, and 3 V 3 at the Mall of America. Our club also brought four additional players who guest-played for teams from Columbia and Brazil. All four players scored for their respective international teams and represented Midwest Select well at the tournament.
We are proud of our players and the skill and heart that they demonstrated at the USA Cup. Read more about United’s trip to USA Cup in USA Cup’s official newsletter and ABC Newspapers. Highlights of the opening ceremonies may be seen in Episode 6 of USA Cup’s Kick TV. Visit our galleries for more photos.

The Midwest United U14 boys also earned first place in their bracket at the Grove competition and the Midwest United U10 girls earned third place in theirs. Coach’s Corner–The Offside Rule Perhaps nothing causes more consternation than the offside rule in soccer. The confusion comes from the fact that a player must simultaneously meet four conditions before being ruled offside. Want to know more? Click here to view a short Flash tutorial on the offside rule. In a few minutes, you will almost be an expert! Also take time to view the tutorial on basic soccer rules and field markings. No “breaking the plane” of the goal line to score!
